Rescue in Regent’s Park

Adam Bethlehem
lllustrated by Zuzanna Celej

The life of a vegetarian Fox can be lonely but Charles Edward survives by scavenging for food on the streets of London. Life changes when he is offered shelter in the home of the fashionable Frederica Porter-Mouse …

The poem is suitable for younger children but is also a parable about life in modern London where individuals and communities of varied beliefs and backgrounds live happily alongside each other (and, like our Fox and Mouse, might even fall in love).

Regent’s Park is public garden near the centre of the great city of London.

In these fields, mice are free to live in peace, and to choose friendship with animals who share the trees and flowers.

To live closely with another creature is to know about their wishes and their fears – in a place like this, even a lonely fox can find a home.

Human visitors to Regent’s Park are also free. From these open spaces, we can reach across oceans and continents to places where cousins of our Mouse and Fox might pursue their dreams.
